Yoga For Women Over 50. What’s the Big Deal?

As a woman over 50, a consistent (or even not so consistent) Yoga practice can change how safe and confident you feel in everyday life, and sometimes it happens within days.

One woman in my Bloom community went from feeling unstable standing on a stool to cleaning her ceiling fans after just 10 days back in class.

Her story is a reminder of what yoga is really for.

It is not about doing perfect poses. It is about moving through your day with ease, strength and confidence.

From feeling "like an old woman" to renewed confidence in 10 days

One of my Bloomers had slipped into a slump.

She was moving less and avoiding everyday tasks because she felt unstable and unsure of herself. Even standing on a stool to clean the ceiling fan felt risky.

She told me: "I was feeling not so motivated, I guess in a slump, but I didn't know the damage I was doing to my body by not moving more and doing properly informed stretches and poses."

Then she came back to class.

After a week and a half, she wrote: "Since I returned, my body thanks me. I feel soooo much better. Stronger, more balanced and flexible."

The change showed up in her daily life: "I stood on a stool and cleaned my fans!! I was so unstable just two weeks before and unsure of myself, feeling like an old woman. And all I needed was a little yoga to get my hips more flexible and stable!!"

Why yoga helps women over 50 with flexibility, stability and balance

When we move less, our core, hips and legs muscles all lose some of their strength and flexibility.

A consistent yoga practice works on several of these things at once:

• Hip mobility: gentle, well-guided stretches help hips move more freely.

• Strength: standing poses build the legs and core muscles that support you when you reach or step.

• Body awareness: you learn where your body is in space, which supports balance.

If you feel dizzy, have pain or have a medical condition, check with your doctor before starting a new movement practice.

Yoga for women over 50 is about everyday mobility, not perfect poses

This story reminds me why I teach yoga.

It isn't about standing on one leg, holding a plank for what feels like forever, or doing any pose perfectly.

It is about practical, everyday mobility, comfort and confidence in our bodies, which matters so much especially for us women over 50.

The mindful movement we practice together in our Bloom Yoga, Pilates or Strength Training classes supports us in everything we do.

It keeps us strong, flexible, mobile and balanced, and confident in our ability to do what we want to do in daily life.
