Why You Can’t Stick to Healthy Habits (It’s Not What You Think)

A few days ago, I got a message from a friend.

She said, “Karin, I’ve fallen off the wagon again. I was doing so well… and now I’ve stopped everything.”

She totally stopped exercising so - no movement. She had no routine. She was feeling stiff, tired, frustrated and down on herself.

I hear this so often from women in their 40s, 50s, and beyond.

They start a new exercise routine.

They do great for a few weeks.

Then life gets busy, maybe work, maybe family needs more attention or sleep gets rough and energy drops.

And then everything stops.

What often follows is the “beating up self phase” which looks like this: why am I so lazy? why can’t I be more disciplined? what’s wrong with me?

But here’s the truth.

It’s not a discipline problem. You’re not lazy, and there’s nothing wrong with you.

What’s actually happening is this: You’re trying to force yourself into routines that don’t fit your life anymore.

What Worked Before Doesn’t Work Now

Maybe in your 20s or 30s, you could push through workouts you didn’t enjoy, follow strict routines or diets, rely on willpower alone.

But now?

You’ve changed. Your body has changed.

Your energy is different.

You have more responsibilities: work, family, kids, life!

And forcing yourself just doesn’t work the same way anymore.

The Real Problem No One Talks About

Most wellness advice still sounds like this:

“Just be consistent”

“Stay disciplined”

“Push through”

“No excuses”

But what if the real issue isn’t you…it’s ‘cause…

If you don’t enjoy something—even a little—you’re not going to keep doing it.

Not long term.

Not when life gets busy.

Not when you’re tired.

Why Forcing Yourself Backfires

Here’s what I see over and over again:

You start something that feels too hard, takes too long, doesn’t feel good in your body.

You push through for a while…

Then you miss a few days.

Then it feels harder to go back.

Then you stop completely.

And then?

👉 You blame yourself.
